Read time - 1.5 minutes

Monção's wine region serves as an ideal introduction to Portuguese wines. The wines, characterised by the Alvarinho grape variety, showcase the unique terroir of the region. The landscape, dotted with vineyards, unfold a story of craftsmanship that has been passed down through generations.

For those seeking a tranquil retreat intertwined with the pleasures of wine culture, Monção proves to be an enchanting destination waiting to be discovered.

The Local Wine Museum (Museu Alvarinho)

Monção is a charming town with cobblestone streets and historic buildings that take you back in time. It is situated in the Minho region, near the Spanish border, and has a history dating back to Roman times. The town boasts well-preserved landmarks like the medieval tower and the beautiful Church of the Misericórdia.

For those who love wine and history, the Museu Alvarinho is a must-visit. Located in the impressive Palácio da Brejoeira, a 19th-century palace, local experts took us on a journey through the winemaking traditions of the Vinho Verde region, which added a layer of appreciation to our wine journey.

Simplicity & Attention To Detail

Wind swept from the rugged Galician coast - home of Albariño, we arrived at The Convento dos Capuchos, a charming rural hotel in Monção, our home for two nights. The attention to detail in both the renovation and service exceeded our expectations.

The Convento dos Capuchos, also known as the Convent of the Capuchin Friars was constructed following the Franciscan principles of simplicity and closeness to nature. It was clear that these principles were observed during the conversion of this convent into a rural retreat.

Monção's Alvarinho wine region served as our gateway to the diverse world of Portuguese wine.
